08.25.08 | Vote for the Best Card in the CitiĀ® Back-to-School Student Promotion
CitiĀ® has recently launched a back-to-school promotion for a couple of their student credit card
s which knocked our socks off. We already had rated them really high on our website and they happen to be two of the most commonly applied for cards on our site too.
When they contacted us and made this offer available to our customers we were thrilled. You should be thrilled too, hereās why:
⢠Youāll only find one student credit card site authorized to offer this deal- us.
⢠10% cash back on gas purchases with the Citi® Dividend Card for College Students
⢠Double points for three months with the Citi® mtvU Student Credit Card
⢠Both cards offer 0% interest for the first 6-months!
So now we want to know which card you think is the best, we think both are pretty good deals. Especially since youāll probably have lots of unplanned expenses at the beginning of the semester, the 0% interest offer can really come in handy.
Hereās what you do, review each card description below. Then at the bottom of this post follow the survey link and tell us which card you think is the best choice for students. If youāre a ScholarshipPoints Member weāll give you 20 points for your vote.
CitiĀ® mtvU Student Credit Card
For a limited time, Citi® is offering the Citi® mtvU⢠Platinum Select® Visa® Card for College Students in this special back-to-school offer. The ® mtvU⢠Platinum Select® Visa® Card for College Students is designed specifically for students and offers a unique reward program that awards students for using credit wisely and for receiving good grades.
Through the reward program, cardholders earn five points for general purchases and ten points for every dollar spent at restaurants, bookstores, record stores, movie theaters, and video rentals during the first 3 months of having the card. These points can be redeemed for gift cards, CDs, a VIP mtvU⢠Spring Break Pass, tickets to the MTV Video Music Awards, and airline tickets. There is a 75,000 yearly limit to the number of points that may be earned, and points expire in five years.
This card has no annual fee, but the interest rate for purchases and balance transfers is above average for a student card. However, there is a 0% introductory rate that applies to all transactions for the first six months (a rare benefit for a student credit card).
The card provides platinum cardholder benefits that include up to $1,000,000 in travel accident insurance, auto rental insurance, and various travel and emergency assistance services. Cardholders also receive a 10% discount on purchases made at the MTV online store and at the MTV New York City Store.
Students who can afford to pay in full each month after the introductory rate expires (to avoid finance charges) and plan to take advantage of the reward program will benefit most from what the Citi® mtvU⢠Platinum Select® Visa® Card for College Students has to offer.
CitiĀ® Dividend Card for College Students
For a limited time, CitiĀ® is featuring the CitiĀ® Dividend Platinum SelectĀ® Card for College Students as part of this great back-to-school offer. Through the reward program, cardholders earn a 10% cash back rebate on purchases made at gas stations, supermarkets, drugstores, convenience stores, and utilities including cable for three months and 2% thereafter, and they earn a 1% cash back rebate on all other purchases as well as on cash advances and convenience check transactions taken at the standard cash advance rate.
Cardholders will receive $5 Dividend Dollars for each balance transfer transaction of $1,500 or more. Rebates earned on purchases through the Citi Bonus Cash Center(SM) are unlimited, but the rebates earned on all other purchases are subject to a $300 maximum per year. A $50 check will be issued upon request once $50 Dividend Dollars have been earned.
This card has no annual fee, but it does have an above average interest rate for purchases (for a student card). However, there is a 0% introductory rate that applies to all transactions for the first six months (a rare benefit for a student card).
The card also offers several platinum benefits and services such as up to $1,000,000 in travel accident insurance, lost and stolen card reporting, and identity theft solutions. However, it is the reward program that proves to be the best benefit available to cardholders.
Students who can afford to pay in full each month after the introductory rate expires (to avoid finance charges) and plan to spend enough to take advantage of the rebate program will benefit most from what the CitiĀ® Dividend Platinum SelectĀ® Card for College Students has to offer. Those who plan to spend less on the credit card or plan to carry a revolving balance may want to consider a credit card with a lower interest rate.
Note: This is an old blog post.Ā Citi no longer offers the Dividend Platinum Select card.Ā To learn why, read our post – Why Student Credit Cards Could Vanish in 2009

August 26th, 2008 | #
I think that’s cool…good deal for students.
August 26th, 2008 | #
I think they both suck! they have interest rates higher than they should and all they do is encourage students to use them! that is NOT the way to get good credit! a lot of “card holders” will use it more just to get the benifts and they will go into debt quicker than a low interest “emergency only” card!!!!
August 26th, 2008 | #
The Citi Dividend card looks much better. 10% cashback for gas, groceries, AND utilities is very competitive. You’d be hard-pressed to find cards that offer even 5% for only one of those categories. In fact, I think I just might apply for this card right now.

August 27th, 2008 | #
good info
August 27th, 2008 | #
Andie, remember that interest is only charged on balances you carry month-to-month. We encourage students to charge what they can pay back in a month and thus avoid paying interest altogether.
If this is what you do, then cards with benefits will really pay off for you better than a low interest card with no benefits (since the low interest rate won’t help you if you don’t carry your balance anyway).
I have probably $2,000 in free golf equipment I got from rewards off my credit cards and I just got a new $300 digital camera for free from my points. Plus I didn’t carry a balance and so didn’t pay interest!

August 29th, 2008 | #
Neither are very good as they both have a high credit l imit. But if I would have to pick one it would be the Dividend despite the fact that it encourages balance transfers which is a terrible idea. Never charge more then you can pay.

I say the Citi Dividend because of the rebates. It’s good to know you can be rewarded for everyday things such as gas, food, etc. Interest rates are crazy but encourage students to use credit wisely.

September 3rd, 2008 | #
I feel the citi dividend card is best for college students due to the fact of receiving a discount on gas and groceries and for also paying day to day living expenses. Sometimes, it is easier to charge them and make smaller payments so we can surive and pay them off at the end of the month when we receive paychecks or student loans/grant funds.

September 5th, 2008 | #
i think the citi dividend would be the better option although i dont believe credit cards are a good idea for anyone especially a college student as there is always something that is “in need” or an “emergency” with someone who is paying out the ass for school anyway. it’s a good way to get into debt that’s gonna cause alot of trouble in the future. Just remember that pizza hut at midnight when youve been cramming for finals for a week straight doesn’t constitue an ‘emergency’ for using your credit card. good luck to all those who have credit cards and if you want to stay out of trouble remember to pay them off quickly.
September 5th, 2008 | #
The mtvu one seems like the best offer. It has the lowest interest rates and you get money back.

Mark: No other site besides Citibank has the card with this offer. We didn’t claim we were the only one to have the card. We are the only one to have this offer. Not all Citi student cards have the same terms.
The other sites offer 5% cash back on gas and 5 points for each $1. Citi offered us specifically 10% cash back on gas and 10 points for each $1. Therefore it is a unique offer for our customers.
Please don’t mislead people yourself

September 29th, 2008 | #
They both sound ok, but the mtvU card offers more benefits for college age people. The only downfall is the percent rate…But in order to increase credit, you have to start somewhere I guess, and as long as your a responsible person, it shouldn’t matter the percent if you pay your balance responsibly.
September 29th, 2008 | #
I like both of the cards, they each seem to have certain benefits. I would personally go for the Citi Dividend Card
September 29th, 2008 | #
Both cards offer good introductory terms. The dididend card would best fit my needs as a student. I use my card more for gasoline these days than ever before. But the trick is to PAY OFF the card when the statement comes in. If you have problems doing that and still want the opportunity to develope credit. Get the card then only use it in amounts you have at that instant in your pocket or bank account. Then send a money order or check for the amount of purchase to the bank. Your card balance will never go over 30 days and you will not pay interest, but you will receive the rewards and build credit at the same time.
