12.30.08 | 10 Reasons Why My Checking Account Beats Yours

Posted in Student Banking by The Platinum Kid

Got your own checking account? If so, do you love it or just feel it’s a necessary part of becoming an adult? I love mine and let me tell you why.

  1. I hate ATM fees so I never pay them.
  2. I hate to pay for a checking account so I don’t have to.
  3. I hate paying for checks; I don’t do that.
  4. I hate to keep a minimum balance, I don’t bother.
  5. I hate to worry about where my bank is if I move.
  6. I love free ATM Debit cards.
  7. I love to earn interest on the money in my checking account.
  8. I love to make free online payments for things.
  9. I love to be able to get direct deposit from my employer.
  10. I love free online banking so I can manage my money from home.

Are you feeling checking account envy? Don’t because there are banks out there which offer students all of this and more. If you don’t have a checking account- get one! When you apply for loans you will be asked if you have one and they help boost your credit score.

Consider opening a new checking account ASAP to save money at ATMs and make money on your balance. If you already have a checking account, switching is easy. Just open the new one for free and keep the old one open for a little while. Gradually start depositing and paying bills from the new one so there is a smooth transition.

Credit Card Guy is the greatest. He has our back ha ha. I hate ATM fees, they are way out of control. If I can get a checking account than reimburses me I’m all over it like a spider monkey.

I LOVE MY CHECKING ACCOUNT WITH USAA THEY HAVE GREAT RATES AND ITS ALL ONLINE I CAN MANAGE EVERYTHING FROM HOME. bEST PART IS THEY REFUND ALL MY ATM FEES

I also have USAA- they’re free, have awesome interest rates, free debit card issued, free checks as often as I need them, I can pay bills online, manage my accounts online, transfer money from checking to savings, and back again for free- there is no minimum balance on either my checking or savings accounts. If I accidentally overdraw my account, it will automatically pull from either my savings or from my credit card to prevent a fee. I can call them for financial advice for free any time I want, from how to save more to how to invest. I also can have direct deposits from an employer or other source. ATM fees are always refunded. My absolute favorite thing is that I can electronically and safely deposit checks from home right into my account- it takes minutes, opposed to sending a deposit slip in the mail! I <3 USAA. Oh, and did I mention that they have great insurance rates too?? My car and rental insurance is also through them!

  37. Brittani says

These accounts sound great but are they really safe? You know FDIC doesn’t mean anything anymore. Once the depression hits not everyone will get their “promised” money back. I’m all for getting one of these for the perks of a debit card and maybe a little interest but my advice (grant it, I’m no proffesional) would be to keep a reasonable amount of cash out of the banks and in a fire safe box and only use the system for the benifits.

ATM fees- UUUUUGH! I can’t say how much that irritates me. How those seemingly small fees add up fast. Eat away at the savings and just drive me nuts.
