02.13.09 | The Truth About Life After College
As a recent college graduate, I can tell you first hand that life after college is a lot more challenging than you may expect. Shortly after college I decided to
move in with a few friends who were still finishing up their senior year at a nearby school. Basically, I was putting off “the real world” by living in a college setting for a 5th year. Great times were had by all, but I soon faced the harsh realization that I wasn’t in my 5th year of college, and was indeed on my own.
On the first of each month rent was due; only this time around I didn’t have Mom and Dad to foot the bill like in years past. Groceries? They cost me an arm and a leg. Either I was completely naive to the actual cost or was woofing them down like Kobayashi in a hot dog eating contest. I actually found myself longing for my school’s meal plan; the same meal plan a year earlier I was complaining about because they didn’t offer cheese-it’s in the cafeteria. What a fool I was. I didn’t realize how good I had it.
I held an entry-level position with nominal pay and was responsible for paying rent, groceries, commuting fees, etc, and still living it up on the weekends like I was Frank The Tank from Old School. Needless to say, I was just squeaking by, and had my girlfriend’s birthday on the horizon. It was then I decided to apply for a credit card.
Throughout college I was not in need of a credit card. I worked about 30 hours per week and my parents contributed a significant amount of money toward my bills. I was certainly appreciative for Mom and Dad, but their generosity actually ended up costing me money later.
Because I hadn’t establish ANY credit during my carefree college years my applications for credit cards with decent APRs were denied, and I was forced to get a student card even though I had already graduated due to my lack of credit. The APR was around 17%. Being naive to credit in general, I didn’t pay much attention to the APR at the time. When I decided to take a few continuing education classes I just swiped the plastic. It was moves like this that slowly made a few hundred dollars become a few thousand.
I was shocked when my minimum payment went up from 20 dollars a month to nearly a hundred. It was then I realized I was basically just paying off the interest. I felt like a fool. Ignorance is not always bliss.
I was finally able to pay off my card a couple years later, by transferring my high balance over to a card that had a 0% introductory rate for six months. I stopped partying and focused on the task at hand. If I only knew then what I know now.
If you live long enough, you’ll make mistakes. But if you learn from them, you’ll be a better person for it. Learn from me.
1) BUILD YOUR CREDIT EARLY. Just because you are “all set” during college does not mean that you should not pay attention to the future. I did not need a credit card, but was not building credit. When the time came that I actually needed a card, I ended up with the high APR card since I did not have credit.. Get a student credit card as a student and put small purchases on it each month like gas, your cell phone bill, etc. Pay it off each month, and build your credit with no harm done.
2). PAY ATTENTION TO DETAILS. A high APR card is fine – IF you pay off your total each month. A lot of students, like myself, do not pay attention to this until its too late.
What do you think? What are your plans after graduation? Are you going to try to give the “real world” an honest shot? If you are, what are your plans for financial success?!? Please comment below!!

I love the way you guys give advice, always on point but funny at the same time. As a 5th year senior and that much further removed from, Mom and Dad, I regret everyday not establishing credit earlier. Now I am 22 and have APRs in high teens like I would have when I was 18.

I think credit cards are a waste of time but i do agree with the above story you have to have some kind of credit established before you really start a new life after college. My plans after college is to start buying my own home for my daughter and I so to know I cn get the help I need i will establish credit before I finish school and make sure my credit is nice.

ABOUT TWO YEARS AGO I GOT MY HANDS ON A COUPLE OF CREDIT CARDS. I TOLD MYSELF THAT I WOULD ONLY USE THEM IN CASE I HAD AN EMERGENCY. WELL, LET ME TELL YOU I HAD MANY EMERGENCIES…AT THE MALL!! EVERY SALE SUCKED ME INTO SWIPING MY CARD OVER AND OVER AGAIN. TODAY, SINCE I AM NOW BROKE WITH NO DAD(HE DIED) AND WORK MY BUTT OFF TO PAY FOR SCHOOL, CAR, CREDIT CARDS, AND ALL THE OTHER MUMBO JUMBO. I WISH I WOULD OF READ THIS ARTICLE A LONG TIME AGO!!

I have this problem at the moment it is hard to get out. If i would read something like this before hand telling me how much trouble credit cards would have gotten me into i don’t think it would have happened. Very insitive.

February 14th, 2009 | #
it was a great read I planned early for a college education 13 years old I planned early I did start out to earn scholarship I did earn some scholarships at that time they were sent to me and stolen by older people for there personal financial gain I at 13 wanted the money put into and account for my college education later, I was not living with my real mom and dad, later it isent any different with these people embezzleing money in my name on a credit card and forcing me into poverty which is debt bondage guess whos in the whole again me!
February 14th, 2009 | #
wow, acturally i have heard of it but just thought it was money in the card that you can use to buy anything but then you would have to pay the bill later.
February 14th, 2009 | #
great article!
February 14th, 2009 | #
Very helpful article!
February 14th, 2009 | #
This article actually made me laugh a little, and made me feel glad (for once) that I’m not a “traditional” college student. I’ve been living in the “real world” since I graduated high school, having to make rent, buy groceries, and pay tuition myself. I’m married, too.
I’m currently in grad school and my plans after that are to be a teacher. I’m already working in education right now, so it isn’t as much of a leap as you might think.
I guess it just goes to show that there is value in many different paths.
February 14th, 2009 | #
Very helpful.
February 14th, 2009 | #
nice
February 14th, 2009 | #
I dont plan on entering the real working world right after graduation, I want to continue my education and earn my masters degree. With this economy, the longer you stay in school, the better chance you will have when our economy takes a jump back up. I will be more educated and more qualified if stay in school.
February 14th, 2009 | #
good to know
February 14th, 2009 | #
That’s a very good idea. You will be more qualified, but remember to also take internships and get a part-time job in your desired field if possible. Experience is more important than anything.
February 14th, 2009 | #
Very true!
February 14th, 2009 | #
I have a Card my dad got me and I use it once a month for something and then pay it off to build my credit..so far so good. My dad said it woould work and it has. mY first limt was $250 ..it has gone up to $1000 since I have paid it off.
February 14th, 2009 | #
I’m still a student in Highschool and I’ve got to say.. I’m scared to grow up… I already pay for pretty much anything I want to buy. I’m a senior in HS and I have two jobs. I pay for my car, my insurance, and my phone all on my own. I can’t remember the last time I asked my parents for money… so I think I’m pretty prepared for the real world since I’m pretty much already in it… But I agree with this article.
February 14th, 2009 | #
helpful information
February 14th, 2009 | #
My mom has already told me about this, so I have two credit cards. I always make sure that I have enough money to pay them off each month.
February 14th, 2009 | #
i just use it and pay it off that month, then you can build the credit and not the interest
February 14th, 2009 | #
Thanks for the information…this will help alot!
February 14th, 2009 | #
It’s good to know about credit so early, I was always just told to stay away from credit cards.
February 14th, 2009 | #
I totally know what ya mean. my sister blew it with credit cards in college…
February 14th, 2009 | #
I definitely agree with the entire concept, because I actually didn’t have anything planned after college. And I now know that I should start thinking about it. This was very much helpful for me and I’m very grateful for had reading this and this story being told (or written =])

Very true and helpful!
February 15th, 2009 | #
It’s a good perspective to look at, but I’m still not sure if getting involved with a credit card is a good thing. I’ll try to avoid it while I can. I think it’s better to find a job and use it to pay some bills, which is another way to get a credit without any interest or small print.
But good luck!
February 15th, 2009 | #
Good advice. I have a macy’s credit card with a high APR. However, I make small purchases and pay them off in total every month, therefore not paying any interest. It’s a great way to build credit.

OK well first of all I’ve had a credit card since I turned 18 and had a debit card since 16 and I’ve never had any issues with spending so much that I can’t pay it back. And second of all even though I’m still in college I’m ready to be out in the real world unfortunately its difficult being an undergrad student in the real world because people don’t really take you seriously.

Don’t student loans build credit too though? My husband had no credit history whatsoever and a collections on his account (from a bank account), but as soon as he took out a student loan cosigned with his mom his credit score jumped considerably.
February 16th, 2009 | #
Very interresting, I’m very glad my parents were mean and taught me the value of the $ and the proper use of credit at a very young age, I think it would be helpful for grade school on up to include money 101 as a required course.
February 16th, 2009 | #
We talked about this in my accouting class. My teacher said that when buying a house, the only bad thing on her credit score was that she did not have enough experience. She suggested the same thing: etting a credit card, using it a little, and paying it off.

Good short story for those who are looking to get their first credit card. Yet even a student credit card can make a person reliant on ‘plastic’ and we that are need to be careful. It is more satisfying to pay for things with the money you actually have and highly dissatisfying to be paying on interest or defaulted payments. One needs self discipline, and money available to pay the credit card. Yet, it is true that many things are easier to be had if a line of credit is established.

I have been there done that I decided when I turned 18 that I would get a credit card to get myself some credit man I was glad the balance was only a 200 balance but if you pay the minimum payment yeah I reliazed it wouldn’t go away until I started paying more towards it.

Miao, trust me, the story is real. I’m 24 years old, and work for ScholarshipPoints and StudentPlatinum. Yes, we make money by promoting credit cards, but no, this story is not made up to do so. We aim to educate students about credit and credit cards, and help them select the BEST cards out there for their situation – rather then have them get a card that is promoted on campus with a free T-shirt, without knowing anything about APR, Credit, etc.
February 20th, 2009 | #
I think that it is very useful to understand the importance of keeping a good credit score. When I first received my credit card I was so reluctant to use it because I had no idea of the consequences or benefits the card would have.
February 20th, 2009 | #
very good advice. helps a lot

If you are late once, they jack you up to the 29% default for 6-12 months depending on the bank.
February 20th, 2009 | #
If you are late once, the defalut is 29% for 6 months to 1 year. Be careful!!
February 20th, 2009 | #
Pretty awesome. My boyfriend is having issues like that.
February 20th, 2009 | #
This is a great story! I can definitely relate to it, but thankfully not in the same no-credit-disaster way. I am a young student and I study far away from my family and although I receive money from them I have a budget and have to manage it well, or else…At first, I didn’t know what to buy in the supermarket so I bought many many things. Can you imagine the total?? I would also eat out a lot and by the end of the month had very little or no money to save or have in case of emergency, etc. I have learned through time how to manage, but I would really recommend getting advice and tips from people who have gone through the same situations as us, which are millions. Getting advice can save you hundreds haha.

You think it’s hard after college solo. Don’t look too far down the road but a wife and kids may require a bit more planing. One who has been to college, raised two kids and returning back to college.

February 28th, 2009 | #
My parents do not help me with college; I am 22 and have been on my own since I was 18. The only reason I am in college is because of FAFSA and the 70 hour a week job I worked for a year to save enough to study. I still do not know how I am going to afford to finish college but I am in my second year and I have great credit. Every action has a consequence; don’t spend money you don’t have.
February 28th, 2009 | #
Definitely an eye opener.
February 28th, 2009 | #

February 28th, 2009 | #

February 28th, 2009 | #
Very helpful and very true. I am a senior in college and have already experienced the ugliness of how carried away I can get with credit cards.
February 28th, 2009 | #
IF you decide to get a credit card, use it for one consistent thing each month that you would be buying anyway. For instance, use the credit card for gas, and when you use the credit card, put aside the cash you would have used to pay for it. At the end of the month, pay off the balance. Also, if the credit card company increases your limit, request that they keep it low until you’re SURE that you will only use it when absolutely needed. Contrary to belief, it is worse to have maxxed out cards than no cards at all. One is enough.
Bottom line: Don’t buy something unless you have the cash for it TODAY.
Article was very helpful, and realistic. Thanks!!!

March 4th, 2009 | #
Helpful, but at the same time you can get by in life without a credit card. There are other ways to build your credit without risking spending money you don’t have. Credit cards are too tempting for spur of the moment purchases.
March 4th, 2009 | #
I found that article very insightfull.

March 5th, 2009 | #
Yeah, we’re stuck in a catch-22. We don’t all necessarily need credit now, but it’s the history that’s important. I would suggest getting a credit card with a low limit, putting something little like your cell phone bill on it every month and setting up automatic bill pay from your checking account. Most places will do that for free.
March 5th, 2009 | #
recommended credit cards was helpful

March 13th, 2009 | #
this is very good information. it make me really think about getting a student credit card in the near future
March 13th, 2009 | #
This was a great article, I graduated in May of 2008; with the economy in a recession it is very to find find a job. Also, I don’t have credit as well, I always thought it was nonsense to have a credit. Watching my old college room-mate manage 6 different credit cards bills, gave me more of a reason to not want to get a credit card. Watching her stress herself out about which card she should pay off; I did not want the hassle. After reading this article, it makes sense to build your credit and build it early. For me personally, I do not want to take the risk and apply for a credit card without having a job to pay the monthly bills. I just hope with few the training courses I have completed and certifications I have attained, I hope they pay off soon. Because I really would like to start building my credits.
March 14th, 2009 | #
thanks a lot for the advice unfortunately they dont offer credit card services in kenya. but i may consider applying for one if i get a chance to study in america.

Thank you so much for this information…being dependent most of my life..this is really valuable information.
May 1st, 2009 | #
I’m glad I looked at this beforehand. I was under the impression that I could get through life without a credit card because I have seen so many people get into debt because of credit cards and I figured that if I didn’t get one I’d have nothing to worry about. I guess that was pretty naive since these days you need a credit card to do almost everything. Thanks a lot for the advice, I’ll definitely be taking that into account as I go off to college.

I agree, this is very valuable advice. However, I would also encourage students to look at their spending habits before they apply for a card, because a whole lot of debt by graduation time is a lot worse than just a high APR afterwards!

However, thanks to your advise, I do agree that I need a card in my own name to establish credit.

August 14th, 2009 | #
my mom already prepared me for most of this, but it’s nice to hear of the different experiences
August 14th, 2009 | #
I don’t know if I’m ready to give the real world a shot. I like being in school and working part time, I can’t imagine doing anything else.
There should be mandatory credit card classes in colleges and even in high school. I just got my second one a couple days ago and it’s taking everything in me not to spend it on things.
August 16th, 2009 | #
I really think credit card dealers who talk to 18 yr olds without knowing if they work, or try to find out if they can pay the card off are just devious individuals. Have you in a crazy debt, having to pay so much all the time and see that the bill is really not going down. Trick you with the minimum payments that really leaves you paying a lot more in the end. I say prepaid cards are the way to go!!
August 16th, 2009 | #

Yeah. I can speak from experiance especially when it comes to the ludicrous interest rates of credit card companies. I went from $15 to $100 for missing the deadline on a routine payment.

I think its good advice, but you don’t necessarily need a credit card. It’s better to have a debit card and buy things at the store that will give you credit. Its better to spend money you have then paying interest for what you don’t own. Yes, I am going to give the world an honest shot.
October 20th, 2009 | #

I completely agree with this article and actually have plans of my own to open a card as soon as i begin college. Also, getting an apartment and paying the bills on time helps build ones credit but beware if possible do not break leases, bad renters history = hard time getting the apt you want

good article and advice
November 5th, 2009 | #
Paying off your credit cards each month does not help your credit much. Make more than minimum payments and pay it off in 6 months. This helps much better when building your credit because it shows you are responsible when handling your money. Also, you can finance furniture. Not rent to own. Again pay more than the minimum payments and this will look good on your credit.

As a single mother and 52 years old, I never had any credit cards nor applied for any. I understood early that if I didn’t have enough to pay for it I didn’t need it. Put something away each pay period and don’t touch it. Have an emergency fund as well. Yeah it’s hard to do but it’s worth it in the long run.
November 8th, 2009 | #
Im sorry you had to learn the hard way but thank you for your generosity of sharing your experience with the rest of us.
November 8th, 2009 | #
