12.30.09 | Cash Windfalls and Debt

Posted in Credit Cards, Financial Information by Little Miss Platinum

Cash WindfallOver the holidays people often receive small cash windfalls as gifts or holiday bonuses. Extra money is always great, but it is sometimes hard to decide what to do with this money especially if you have debt to pay off. When you get extra money it is fun to go out and buy something you really want, but it is practical to put that money towards debt. So what should you really do?

I usually use the 25%-75% rule. This means using 25% of the money to buy something fun and 75% of the money toward paying off debt. By doing this you won’t feel deprived, but you won’t feel guilty either. It is best to put the 75% towards your debt with the highest interest rate. If you have credit card debt that is probably the one you will want to tackle first. You should use this rule with every cash windfall until your debt is paid off. If you do not have any debt you can use the same rule and put the money into savings or investments instead.

Here is an example: For Christmas this year I received about $500 in gifts from family members. Although I do not have any credit card debt I do have student loan debt and a car that I am paying off. Since my car loan has the highest interest rate I took $375 and put it towards paying that off. I then took the the remaining $125 and went on a little shopping spree.

Of course, if you are in serious debt and not able to make even minimum monthly payments it is wise and necessary to put the entire sum towards digging yourself out. Otherwise, have a little bit of fun, but keep your eye on the end result and think about how good it will feel when you are debt free!

I think since the money was a gift, or atleast most people dont expect it, why not use all of it to pay off debt, just for the simple reason you went that long without a shopping spree so what is it to wait an extra couple of months

I disagree with the 25%-75%.As the article states “By doing this you won?t feel deprived, but you won?t feel guilty either.” If I have that dept it is because I “borrowed” money that needs to be paid back. So if I ever recieve any extra money that would go stright towards the dept. The fact is I borrowed money that was not mine and now I have a dept that I am full responible for. Cleary I already spent that money which lead me into a dept and I wont feel like I deprived myself in any way but in fact i wouold feel gulity for not paying back what I so called “borrowed.”

Oh boy, I have a huge problem with shopping. But I also like to be rather conservative when it comes to saving. Debt is easy to consume and I believe the 25-75% plan really does make sense. Thanks for the advice.

It depends on how much ‘extra’ money one gets. Obviously if it is a substantial amount ($100 or more), then it would be wise to put at least SOME of the money towards bills, i.e. credit cards, gas, groceries, etc. However, I think anything less than $100 should be used for ‘fun’ stuff- eating out, going to the movies, etc. UNLESS one is behind on meeting financial obligations. It is then, that every extra dollar received should be spent only on meeting those financial obligations.

I’m a big tight wad! I go to consignment stores and buy my clothes off the $1 racks and some of them are brand new designer clothes! I go to a store called Dots where nothing is over $20 and it’s all this weeks Fashions! I shop at Aldi’s for my Groceries and save about $30-$40 a week! Then, I buy everything else needed at Walmart! I also buy a lot of things off ebay, half.com, and so forth. We save atleast 25% or more of my husbands annual income a year!
