10.19.09 | Satisfy Your In-School Financial Needs
Poor and college students go together like rhythm and blues. As soon as one bill gets paid “poof” another one surfaces. It’s really tough when you’re living for today with minimal means while planning for tomorrow, which is what college is all about. Toss in your occasional $25 overdraft charge and it feels like you’ll never be able to climb out of that financial ditch.
It’s embarrassing to admit but when I was in college I used to gather loose change from underneath the seat cushions of the couch in the common area. There was nothing like the taste of a Pepsi I didn’t have to pay for, and sadly couldn’t pay for. But it doesn’t have to be that way for you. There are ways to bridge the gap between now and your winter break when most students grab some seasonal work. A credit card by Citi can serve as your best friend over the short term.
The real key to credit card discipline is identifying needs and wants and only using it for the needs. Unfortunately that line sometimes gets blurred by many young adults which leads to a sizable credit card balance. Charging a $299 PS3 system on your credit card is clearly a want and not a sensible purchase while using your card for such essentials as gas and food is a reasonable need. Still, if you don’t trust yourself completely you may want to request a lower line of credit or set a credit limit alert for yourself, which Citi offers to all its cardholders.
The credit limit alert system is great because it sends you an immediate email notification if you are getting close to your credit limit. It really is a terrific way of monitoring yourself. With a modest line of credit and a credit line alert you will ensure you’re in control of your spending.
College is stressful enough without wondering if you can make it from here to there because your tank is buried on “E” or stressing out over how much money is left on your credit line. Just think of Citi as the perfect last line of defense. Oh yeah, and as an added perk you can earn points as you spend to use toward gift cards, concert tickets, video games, airline tickets, mp3 players, DVD’s and much more. Qualified applicants can even score a 0% APR on purchases and balance transfer balances for the first 6 months.
So if the seat cushions at your school come up bare now you know you have another option.

I have been told that credit cards in college should be avoided and under no circumstances used. However, I am sure that when an emergency comes up such as gas or maybe something inexpensive to eat it would be fine to use the credit card. Except many college students get caught up in debt because they want to use the Credit cards on wants. That is a risk I am not sure I want to take.
November 18th, 2009 | #
Credit cards are a bad idea. I know they say use them in an emergency, but everything can be seen as an emergency. I do believe this is a bad habit. You are already in debt with the loans you have to pay back from being in school. Why add credit card debt on top of that. A student will be better off getting a part-time job while in school or during school breaks.
November 18th, 2009 | #
the advice was very good. I learned something from it.
November 18th, 2009 | #
I am sure that a credit card will come in handy. I am sure this will be a challenge for me. I will definitely have to request a lower limit. I do not like to owe so hopefully this will help me manage my use of the credit card.
November 18th, 2009 | #
wow thanks!
November 17th, 2009 | #
I kind of relate to the author on struggling and I am probably going to be paying for all my college expenses in the future.

I’m so ecstatic about going to college. Only problem is, i’m not very good with my money. This article has definitely shed light on what is necessary for me to do in order to succeed financially as a new college student.

good idea maybe this is what we need
November 17th, 2009 | #
Although a limit on a credit card seems like a good idea, obtaining a credit card is still a bad idea for most college students. The transition from financial dependence to relative financial independence is difficult and the reason many are in debt after college.
November 17th, 2009 | #
i think the idea of using a credit card is good for the people who can be responsible but not all people can manage to use a credit card.
November 17th, 2009 | #
I’m not even in college yet, and I’m already stressing over tuition and such. Always good to know you can scour the net for such helpful advice.

November 16th, 2009 | #
yes i know that college is very expensive. and there are people that use thier credit card for alomost everything. this is a very bad habit. i think the credit card limit is a good idea
November 16th, 2009 | #
It is a good theory but credit cards put a lot of pressure on someone, especially someone who is looking to have fun in college. The temptation and consequences of abusing it would not be worth having a credit card.
November 16th, 2009 | #
– anything is possible now and days. I think its a good idea , it will pay off .
November 15th, 2009 | #
This is very true, stressing over any fincial need is very easy to do.
November 15th, 2009 | #
I’m really struggling in planning my college finances. I have to pay for everything, and I understand how this writer feels. I think I will also end up searching for change everywhere I can.

This is a good system, and if it’s everything it is claimed to be then the people who use it will be that much closer to being debt free.
November 15th, 2009 | #

November 15th, 2009 | #
now i know scholarships r really important
November 14th, 2009 | #
I have a credit card now and i find that i use it and i forget i used it. Especially if it’s for small things. And when i have money i actually see how much i’m spending and it helps me realize how much i’m spending. I think credit cards might be essential for college, because you can’t always have cash but i can see how someone could get in trouble with it.

November 11th, 2009 | #
This article has some great advice. I?ll be going to college in the fall of 2010. So, this article showed me how I can manage my money.
November 11th, 2009 | #
I like this article, this would be an option for some an I like that Citi does have a limit an different perks to it that help you manage yourself an keep yourself in line, I think it all depends on the person themselfs who want to get a credit card, plus it will help toward your credit score an in the long run for yourself when your older for the finer things in life like buying a new vehicle of morgage for a house.
November 11th, 2009 | #
This passage has some applicable points to it. By watching what you spend your money on you will be one step ahead of everyone else. Never use a credit card on food… once its gone, its gone – you will never get it back. Becareful how you use your credit card though because the last thing you want is to be in debt.
November 10th, 2009 | #
The interest on loans are nearly just as bad as credit cards; there’s no winning here.
November 10th, 2009 | #
I’ve never had a credit card. just a debit card. this way i have to only spend what i have. it’s been an awesome strategy thus far.
November 10th, 2009 | #
I have to agree with most of you that the use of credit cards is a bad idea because they spent on wants instead of needs. I know this first hand i have came to my max amount of loans so now i am trying to get any and all help i can….:(
November 10th, 2009 | #
This is understandable, because often many people graduate and can not find a stable job or just dont have the desire to which does not help with the college debt. Which is why often people say college is a waste of time and money, i beleive it really depeneds on what you would like to do in life and how you go about achieving that.
November 10th, 2009 | #
This posting makes some very valid points about paying attention to what you’re spending money on. It’s hard sometimes to step back and decide what you NEED vs. what you just want, and change your spending habits accordingly.
November 10th, 2009 | #
very useful.
November 10th, 2009 | #
Credit cards can be a huge headache!! But they can also be lifesavers too!! After I graduate college, it’ll be bye bye to credit cards for me.
November 10th, 2009 | #
We might just survive. Thanks.
November 10th, 2009 | #
Don’t use credit cards to pay for school! If you can’t pay off your card every month, you can’t afford it.
November 10th, 2009 | #
I dont think getting a credit card is fun or great because you put yourself in debt when in reality there are other ways to get money
November 9th, 2009 | #
It is stressful to think that I wont have enough money for college.
November 9th, 2009 | #
I don’t think getting a credit card is the solution for paying for college, you’ll just end up further in the hole.
November 9th, 2009 | #
I think a credit card during college would be a helpful, but dangerous tool.A person has to be a responsible and smart shopper.
November 9th, 2009 | #
You guys have a point.
November 9th, 2009 | #
Im sorry but after hearing so much about collage students having to drop out cause of their credit card debt. Im not sure if any brand of credit would make a difference to me. Besides Im sure some students would be in debt with their collage loans alone for that matter. Make due with what you have I always say.

needs and wants are two different things
November 7th, 2009 | #
See i feel credit cards don’t help the problem but yet make it much worse. It’s so easy to build up a debt that you wont be able to repay for the rest of your life.

November 4th, 2009 | #
It is important to use cards in moderation and not let that great feeling of spending get the best of you.
November 4th, 2009 | #
All students need a little help here and there. With very little experience in handling a bank account, this is a perfect way to give us a little reminder and that we need to get back on track.

very good article. agree 100%

Spending can be really dangerous! Sometimes I get caught up in things I want and not things I neccisarily need. If you could form a good spending habit, it will get you far in life!
November 3rd, 2009 | #
thanks for this useful info.i’ll be sure to use it as my own experience
November 3rd, 2009 | #
The biggest problem people have with credit card debt is that they feel like they can spend as much as they want. They end up buying many things they don’t need and before they know it they have a huge debt to pay.
November 3rd, 2009 | #
Credit cards arent the way! Use them with great discipline if its a necessity if not you’ll owe money that you obviously dont have.
November 3rd, 2009 | #
Coming for a family where credit is awful, I am doing everything in my power to not depend on any resources that will get me caught up w/ debt. Why put yourself in the scenario of oweing money that you do even know when you’ll be able to pay back. Make using credit cards your very last! option, and the fruits of your labor will truly pay off
November 3rd, 2009 | #
I agree with this article a lot. College is were most of our debts begin and then we can’t get rid of them easily.
November 3rd, 2009 | #
a good tip to have when obtaining a good amount of money to last until the holidays is to save often and don’t spend more than what you are making. also put your needs before your wants and learn to discipline yourself as well
November 3rd, 2009 | #
although this has many great ways to keep you from going over your limit i happen to disagree with getting a credit card at all considering the interest you will have to pay, after spending that money, provided by the company, that you didn’t have availible in the first place.
November 3rd, 2009 | #
cool nice points
November 3rd, 2009 | #
wiseness counts when using cedit card.
November 3rd, 2009 | #
Credit cards are more trouble than they are worth. Good spending habits are learned through trials and tribulations, believe me I have been there.
November 3rd, 2009 | #
I can agree 100% I know what it’s like spending Unnecessary money on the dumbest things and God forbide charging something my credit card! I think I need to talk to someone about my poor spennding habits
November 3rd, 2009 | #
I was always taught to stay away from credit cards and for that exact reason. They are nothing but trouble. My parents used credit cards and it is safe to say that those credit cards were what blossomed the low credit scores they still have today.
Debit cards are the way to go, but from my experiences, credit cards are nothing but trouble and should be avoided.
November 3rd, 2009 | #
A well written article addressing a subject that college students everyone can relate to. Taking responsibility for our expenditures is the first step towards recognizing how to become more self reliant in the lean times as well as in times of plenty. Avoiding the credit trap will bring freedom and opportunity, just as earning a degree will.
November 3rd, 2009 | #
credit cards are a dangerous option especially when you dont have a job to suppor them or know what your employment will be when you do graduate.
November 3rd, 2009 | #
As much as I would hate to use a credit card for everything, I have to admit I’d probably use it a lot.
November 3rd, 2009 | #
I enjoyed this article. It really gave me good insentive to stay away from credit cards and manage my money more carefully
November 3rd, 2009 | #
I completely agree money is a important topic especially when you are talking about college and being on your own. I feel that a credit card is a very good idea as long as you it wisely and only in case of emergencies.
November 3rd, 2009 | #
yes i do beleive in haveing a credit card in college is very good way, not only to build credit, but to build responsibilty in ones life.

November 2nd, 2009 | #

November 1st, 2009 | #
I think it is very important for young people to learn to save and manage money. Prioritizing your expenses and wants is the best way to look at your money
November 1st, 2009 | #
I think having a credit card in college can be good if you have parents that support you with a certain amount on a monthly basis. You could have the credit card for emergencies(a pair of shoes with matching handbag is NOT emergency, and you would be able to pay your bills when you get your allowance. Now if you don’t have support from your parents, and if you don’t have a job, LEAVE THE CREDIT CARD ALONE.That’s what i think.

My parents though that a credit card was the right way to go for them when they were about my age… 18 years later, they are still trying to pay off their credita card debt!!! they are not worht the hassle in my eyes. Find a job over breaks and that should be able to keep you going for a while or better yet, find a job working at a co-op for your field of interest
October 31st, 2009 | #
Agreed- some great info here, but not sure I need yet another credit card…

October 31st, 2009 | #
I think that people realize that there is a clear difference between “wants” and “needs,” but knowing this difference doesn’t always stop people’s impulses. If it did, not as many people would have such large amounts of credit card debt.
October 31st, 2009 | #
A credit card is going to just push us down. Saving is the answer but don’t let the loans get out of hand either when you get gather these.
October 30th, 2009 | #
I have been seeking the Lord alot because my finical needs are more than I expected going back and forth to college. So I can really use a scholarship.

I hate credit cards! don’t do it!!!!!!
October 29th, 2009 | #
now a days students takes advantages of the swiping that the credit card companies give them in things that they want more often then what is really needed
October 29th, 2009 | #
Having a credit card while being a student is a great opportunity to build and establish themselves for the future; however, things can get out of hand if they do not have self control on their spending habits. I say get a credit cars for gas, for food, for clothes and for the rest of the things that are essential to us. After all, you will we spending tha money on them anyways, so why not kill two birds with one stone and build credit too. =)
October 29th, 2009 | #
I have credit card debt now from purchasing textbooks and software that was required for particular courses. At the time it seemed to be a solution to my problem,I am now feeling the sting from my choices.
October 29th, 2009 | #
I would think that having a credit card just increases student stress.
October 29th, 2009 | #
I also feel that getting a credit card will put a student way in over there head. mayeb not right away, but in the long road it can do some serious damage.
October 28th, 2009 | #
This is a great article!
October 28th, 2009 | #
credit cards aren’t always the best choice
October 28th, 2009 | #
this is soo tru and credit cards are so bad for you. they make me feel like i have money to spend when i really dont.
October 28th, 2009 | #
I too have had to roll change to make ends meet. I have 3 kids & going to school full time so it is very tempting to use the credit cards. I keep mine locked up in a safe in my closet so that when I go shopping I can not use it. That seems to help prevent those impulse purchases.
October 28th, 2009 | #
As scarey as it is right now to go broke, for me it’s even scarier to have another credit card right now. I’m already head over heels in debt, I don’t want anymore.
October 28th, 2009 | #
i don’t think that getting a credit card will solve financial problems but will actually increase them
October 28th, 2009 | #
Credit cards can get you in trouble in the future!
October 28th, 2009 | #
i don’t thnk having a credit card is very good at all. you just have to pay more money than you started out with. Its a problem on top of another problem. but that’s just my opinion.
October 28th, 2009 | #
I really don’t think college students don’t need to get into anymore debt. In my opinion, the typical college student is not going to have the discipline and restraint to only use their credit card when every they are in need. They might need to get a part time job.
October 28th, 2009 | #
I agree with this article and that credit cards are usually the source of debt for many college students.
October 28th, 2009 | #
I believe that credit cards are both something to make life easier and also an inconvenience. For instance, when you don’t want to carry money to avoid being mugged a credit card is a safer way of avoiding any dangerous situation prior to the mugging. Yet, credit cards are dangerous to your future for if you want to buy a new car or home.
October 28th, 2009 | #
A creit card its good only if you know to control your self so at the end you dont suffer
October 28th, 2009 | #
So basically the point is have a credit card, but be responsible enough to use it for needs and not get carried away with “extra” money.
October 27th, 2009 | #
this article is very TRUE!!
October 27th, 2009 | #
A credit card can be good for establishing credit if you have self control. However, credit cards make it really easy to get into debt. It’s debatable on whether or not it’s a good idea.
October 27th, 2009 | #
I definitely have been hoping and praying for a scholarship my schooling is so much that I need as much help as I can get, without going to my parents for money; or taking out more loans than I need. & screw credit cards they only get you into trouble!
October 27th, 2009 | #
I believe that debit card should come before credit card. It’s not any late to learn finance stuffs first and then obtain a credit card.

I think that until the prices of college books does not come down this problem will remain to be a common one.
October 27th, 2009 | #
The information will be very useful to me even though I do not have a credit card. I’m pretty good in managing my money…So wish me Luck in the future.
October 27th, 2009 | #
this is a really great article. credit cars are addicted. and its great to find out way how to manage your money
October 27th, 2009 | #
No thank you on credit cards I just got rid of all of mine and never plan to get them back. I would rather find scholarships to help with the cost of school. Credit card companies are abusing their customers because of the upcomming law that goes in to effect in Feburary. I had citi and they kept changing the due date. Do not trust credit card companies no matter how good you are at paying on time every month.
October 27th, 2009 | #
i think that having a credit card is good for certain circumstances but just by having it is a temptation to use it. i personally have a debit card which is linked to my checking account so i know how much i have left in it and how much i should spend in order to conserve.
October 27th, 2009 | #
Its too much temptation. We dont see the money we spend we just swipe. And it feels harmless until the bill comes, yikes!!!
October 27th, 2009 | #
When your young and dumb you tend to think oh I can just charge it now and pay for it later…the problem is that you really do end up paying later…and a lot more. Its better to try and save for something than just charge it. Paying for college and regular every day living expenses…you have to find a balance. Maybe try to see where you can cut back on those want items to help get throught the tough times.
October 27th, 2009 | #
A credit card if used right can help any college student out out a bind. But just one and the right one, don’t go overboard.
October 27th, 2009 | #
I think that having one credit card is a good start. When you have more than one it gives you the advantage of spending to much. I also think that a college student can manage to have one a 4 hour job for 5 days a week. That way you should have enough income for food and all neccessities
October 27th, 2009 | #
I think it’s best just having 1 credit card to start out and learn how to manage your spendings with that. It’s convenient to have a credit card in case of emergencies and once we become more responsible enough, spend wisely and know we can pay our debt back then you can apply for another.
October 27th, 2009 | #
hmmm
October 27th, 2009 | #
I LOVE COLLEGE!!!
October 26th, 2009 | #
I was always told to stay away from credit cards but after reading this I might consider getting one
October 26th, 2009 | #
yeah I hate always thinking about how I’m going to pay for college, its such a big burden for just a young teenager.
October 26th, 2009 | #
According to what i read just now, the real key to credit card discipline is identifying needs and wants and only using it for the needs.Spending credit card is not just to pay for anythng or to buy anthing that is not necessary but to use it for something compulsory and that is if there is no other way except to spend the credit card. in short, credit card is not an easy way
October 26th, 2009 | #
I feel like ever since I have started college I spend more money than I ever have before. And Iknow how stressful it is to try to control spending because your not sure when your going to get more income from work or your parents. If your parents even give you money. A credit card is a good back up when you have to pay for something and pay with your debit card knowing you will probably overdraw. These are the times when desperation for a credit card would happen.
October 26th, 2009 | #
People have to start being responsible and patient.
October 26th, 2009 | #
Credit should definitely be used wisely. I think I have enough smarts to use that credit and not get myself into trouble.
October 26th, 2009 | #
Very good article!
October 26th, 2009 | #
i really do not like using credit cards it’s just more money you have to pay
October 26th, 2009 | #
It’s amazing how many people find themselves in these situations after claiming that it will never happen to them.
October 26th, 2009 | #
Just be responsible. Its a great way to learn how to budget your own expenses. It really is a learning experience.
October 26th, 2009 | #
There are plenty of students paying their own way through school and a credit card (when used wisely) is a great means of helping the student make it in college.
October 26th, 2009 | #
i never owned a credit card. i’m not financially stable right now, so i cant afford to own a credit card. i believe that if i am lucky enough to win 3 out of the 10 scholarships that i am applying for this semester, then i wouldn’t have to worry about the choices when owning a credit card.
October 25th, 2009 | #
Hmm, I feel that a lot of people have terrible self-control.
Ask yourself before you use the card,” Do I NEED this?”
OH, btw. Dollar stores ftw >:3
I can’t wait to prove that I can be independently strong in college. Watch out people ^O^)/
October 25th, 2009 | #
It’s difficult that so many places require you to have a credit history like renting an apt. A very limited credit card that goes to my parents is probably what I will be able to convince my parents to do.
October 25th, 2009 | #
This is so true! Financial needs for college are a stressor for young teens these days!
October 25th, 2009 | #
I think credit cards at my age would be a huge mistake
October 25th, 2009 | #
I see the reason for credit cards. However, I am trying my hardest to never use one. Watching mom & dad crawl out from under debt stressed out the whole family!
October 25th, 2009 | #
Hahaha, being rewarded for buying things you don’t need (concert tickets, video games, mp3 players, etc.) seems hardly conducive to trying to spend less altogether…
October 25th, 2009 | #
Well to me,it always seems as though we think about finances the most when we are facing adversity. Its obvious that if you do not have much, you would want to do better and put the little money that you have to good use.
October 25th, 2009 | #
no such thing as easy when it comes to credit cards and charging!!!
October 25th, 2009 | #
I do not trust myself with a credit card however it seems it would be helpful to those who are struggling and could!
October 25th, 2009 | #
Not spending money is hard. I really don’t like to use a credit card unless I know I can pay it off. Issues of using credit card are hard to understand. I want to win a lot of scholarships so I may not have to use one.
October 25th, 2009 | #
When the student is young it can be difficult for them to understand the financial responsibility of signing up for and using a credit card. It is also difficult for a younger person to understand the long-term ramifications of not making timely payments. Anyone signing on for any credit card needs to understand how fast their credit can go south if payments are not met.
October 25th, 2009 | #
Credit cards are so not the answer its hard enough paying off student loans at the intrest rate they have let alone trying to pay back a credit card with a rate of 21% or higher.
October 24th, 2009 | #
This article is very true in so many ways! so many students use credit cards for to many wants never any needs.
October 24th, 2009 | #
True but be careful how you use. Be sure to set a budget
October 24th, 2009 | #
good advice
October 24th, 2009 | #
I am trying to ave as much money I can when I am in college
October 24th, 2009 | #
I think credit cards are more trouble than they are worth. You end up paying more for something because of interest.
October 24th, 2009 | #
The fact of the matter is most of us are used to having our parents help us with our expenses. College is a rude awakening when it comes to spending on what you need and not about what you want.I totally agree with this article.
October 24th, 2009 | #
Credit cards are only good when you have the means to pay for what you charged in the same month you charged it. Interest rates will kill you. Especially with our economic conditions the way they are. Banks can pretty much do what they want with your interest rate anytime they want. Use one if you have no other choice but also use alot of self discipline.
October 24th, 2009 | #
Credit cards are great if used responsibly. I never get carried away and use them on things I do not need. I use them for emergency situations which are 98% school related. I was glad I had it because it saved me when I had no way of getting the money I needed. Of course I pay off more than the minimum.
October 24th, 2009 | #
I understand!
October 24th, 2009 | #
I understand~!
October 24th, 2009 | #
This is soo true! Im not at a university yet, but my friends are going through the same things!
October 24th, 2009 | #
Don’t do the credit card thing!!!
October 24th, 2009 | #
I have a credit card and my parents are helping me out a lot. I whenever I didn’t have cash on hand I would use my card. This caused me to have a little bit of debt. If you know how to handle a credit card then you deserve one, because everyone needs to earn credit. By having a system that alerts me is a great idea, and would save a lot of stress, especially when it comes to school.
October 24th, 2009 | #
Stay away from credit cards if you can they have got me in trouble and I won,t be out for two more years…….
October 23rd, 2009 | #
If you spend more than you make, or have comng in each month, you will be in trouble. It is better to spend under your budget rather than over. It is hard to “catch up” once you get behind.
October 23rd, 2009 | #
this is good!
October 23rd, 2009 | #
Many college students struggle with managing money. This credit card will help them manage their money in a wiser fashion.
October 23rd, 2009 | #
You definitely should be apprehensive. I do the same thing, I work two jobs while going to school full time and put roughly 60% into savings and 40% into checking. Its a great method to save money, though I do have a citi credit card that I took out my first year of college and ended up using it for both necessities and pointless stuff and as a result I feel as if now I need to dig into my savings to pay it off. If I pay the minimum 20/month I see 17 going back on in just finance charges so it becomes really difficult to manage. So you really need to be careful when deciding whether or not to get one.
October 23rd, 2009 | #
THAT IS SO TRUE!!!!!!!!
October 23rd, 2009 | #
I think that obtianing a credit card without a steady income is counterproductive. Sure, you can have that Pepsi now but the bill will come and most cards have no grace period anymore. (i.e. the chance to pay off the balance before you start being charged for interest.) A student is better served by applying for scholarships. My daughter spent days filling out scholarship applications and received almost $15k…much more than any job could have provided. Revolving debt should be reserved exclusive for your post-college needs.
October 23rd, 2009 | #
I think reaching under the sofa cushions for loose change is sad but true for many college students. Many people don’t qualify for finacial aide and this is what is happening with students and credit card users.
October 23rd, 2009 | #
you can easily get caught up in debt because of these things
October 23rd, 2009 | #
credit cards can be addicting and i don’t want to go that rought…so thank you, but no thanks
October 23rd, 2009 | #
Uhhhhhh I totally understand!
October 23rd, 2009 | #
I understand the benefits of having a credit card however, I’m still apprehensive. I think that one of the best things is knowing how to budget your money. What I do is whenever I get payed I split it: 60% goes into savings and 40% to checking. As a result of not spending much money I end up having extra for books and such.
October 23rd, 2009 | #
you dont want to get started on credit cards there a trap.
October 23rd, 2009 | #
credit cards will kill you before you get started in the work force
October 23rd, 2009 | #
I have a debt card and I don’t have a car on campus. I am lucky enough that my parents give me money if I absolutely need it, but in reality, I really dont have to have money. I have a meal plan at school and food is really the only thing that would probably stress me out with money. I don’t need a debt card, but I think if someone doesn’t have the means I say go ahead with a credit card, but be careful.
October 23rd, 2009 | #
I believe you should take into cosideration just how far college education goes when searching for the ultimate career.
October 23rd, 2009 | #
Another way to build credit without getting a credit card is to buy a small piece of jewelry and make payments on it.
October 23rd, 2009 | #
Sad but true…most of us are in the same boat!
October 23rd, 2009 | #
GREAT WAY TO HELP

October 23rd, 2009 | #

that way you earn rewards

I do not like credit cards or a loan they why I am looking for scholarship. The article had some great advice.
Thank you, I let my friends read it.
October 22nd, 2009 | #
Credit cards always make things more stressful but if they are only used for necessities and paid off right away they can be great. Everyone needs to build credit. Not having any established credit can make it difficult to get loans for a car or a new home.
October 22nd, 2009 | #
i love the article its so true! forget ps3’s! its all about my education!
October 22nd, 2009 | #
I learned the hard way…don’t use credit cards unless you have the money to pay them off right away..they are a great way to blow your credit report, or improve it if used wisely
October 22nd, 2009 | #
this article is true but i don’t think that it is realistic. it’s not enough to just tell students to have limits or have a limit set on yoru credit card. people are going to spend alot if they want. i guess it just depends on who you are and how impulsive and self controlling you are.
October 22nd, 2009 | #
I still keep a jar of change in my drawer
October 22nd, 2009 | #
Good Article. Identified benefits and pitfalls to having a credit card.
October 22nd, 2009 | #
there is no such thing as a need. What we define as a need is a desperate want.
October 22nd, 2009 | #
I’ve had problems financially (god knows all students do) so I went ahead and attempted the credit card bit. I agree with Joel “but at the end you own more money then when you started” I began by buying the essentials attempting to keep myself out of debt and trying to pay my card. I ended up in a very big whole since my card kept on over drafting because of the large late fees, (pay day and the time the card needed the money did not work out so well) After that I decided that I wasn’t going to get another card again, at least not until I am truly prepared and with a better job (which going to school won’t really permit)
October 22nd, 2009 | #
how can i get scholarships and quick
October 22nd, 2009 | #
The article has a great point, credit cards can be very useful as long as your careful about what you use it for and I know I have significantly less money than I did when i was in highschool
October 22nd, 2009 | #
i think people start off college with the belief that they can manage their credidt card spending but in reality thats not the case most of the time. we’re here away from our parents. we have a card with money and we can have all the fun we want and buy stupid stuff. the fact is we like to have fun and then regret it later like getting wasted.
October 22nd, 2009 | #
Thanks but not thanks. You can get your Credit Cards.
October 22nd, 2009 | #
Credit Cards are not the way that I want to go. Thanks but no thanks

October 22nd, 2009 | #
I believe that there are times where financial help is there, but not openly available. I am a single mother trying to earn a living , support my household and trying to go back to school. Not very easy at all. I’m stugggling daily.
October 22nd, 2009 | #
This article suggest some very beneficial points, however if i do not have a job while in college and no source of income this still would not be beneficial to me because how will I cover the bill?
October 22nd, 2009 | #
That is a very good option for most college student, because some of us as students have no money and our parent are working really hard to pay bills and everything. I say if its good option for you right now then take it, but don’t go crazy because you have a magic card.
October 22nd, 2009 | #
I agree with the article. A lot of time the financial problems do start in college when you have all this freedom with a new credit card. College students just need to be careful.
October 21st, 2009 | #
This is a correct sinario. Many individuals in college such as myself are broke and need financial assitance. Many college students I know turn to private loans but in the end can not afford to pay them back. Credit Cards are another common thing college students do but in the end being more in debt then when we started.
October 21st, 2009 | #
As mentioned in the article, I’ve found that the best way to stay out of credit card debt is to only use it for essentials. I try to only use my credit card at the grocery store or when buying books for school or paying for other school expenses.
October 21st, 2009 | #
Yes, college is hard when it comes to fincances. I feel that it is also a humbling experience bacause you learn how to do without as well as learn to work with what you have. I have had a credit card since freshman year but I was also very careful on how I used it. I am a penny pincher so I only used it when necessary but throughout my college years I feel like I am still trying to learn how to manage money.
October 21st, 2009 | #
Great article, but I have a credit card. and I am in over my head with debt already.
October 21st, 2009 | #
i was always told that we should NOT turn to credit cards when in college.because they are the easiest way to go into debt?
October 21st, 2009 | #
This article is very informative. I think all college students should read it because its the truth. I myself have been guilty of looking for loose change under the couch cushions.

October 20th, 2009 | #
This is so true! It is key to know what you NEED and what you only WANT.
October 20th, 2009 | #
Even though you can control the amount of money you can charge, won’t people still use it and then stress out later about not having money for gas?
October 19th, 2009 | #
This article has some great advice. I’ll be going to college in the fall of 2010. So, this article showed me how I can manage my money.
October 19th, 2009 | #
I believe that this was a great article…Many college students find themselves in credit card debt by spending money on “wants” and not “needs”
October 19th, 2009 | #
I really hate to start using credit cards so thats why I am hoping to get a lot of scholarships.
October 19th, 2009 | #
THis is true. People stress out all the time about their financial needs for college tuition.
October 19th, 2009 | #
i think that yes it is hard when you in college especially with books but i feel that a creditcard even thought interes is low it help you at the moment but at the end you own more money then when you started cause you have the freedom to buy everything you want and need.
