Let me introduce myself by saying that yes…my name is Hazel…and no…I am not a senior citizen. I think my parents are just “different”. Anyways I go to MMC, or Marymount Manhattan College in NYC. Its classified as a liberal arts college, but a lot of people who go here major in theatre or dance. Me…not so much. I am a Comm Arts major…and just to give the comm arts dep’t a shout out, the program itself is great, and the professors are kick a**. Here is my dilemma: I’m poor, i live in nyc, and I go to school full time. This doesn’t leave me a lot of time to work, never mind SAVE…but I am determined to do it.
I thought about what I spend my money on every day…and I realized it is not WHAT I am buying, but WHERE. I probably make 2-3 Bodega stops a day…whether its for a quick drink, a gallon of milk, or some apartment essentials. I compared the prices in the Bodega to the prices in the grocery store, and I nearly fell over. On average the prices from the Bodega…(oh and for those who don’t know what a bodega is…its what we call all those little convenience stores on practically every block in NYC).. so the prices were on average $1 dollar more than in the grocery store. And depending on the product, it can sometimes be 3 dollars more, for the same product. So while some can afford to pay more for convenience, I am not in the position to do so. SO here is my plan…I am going on a Bodega strike. I am going to only shop at the bigger grocery stores…here I come Gristedes! I don’t think doing this alone will help me save $500 by December 31st, but it is a start. I still have to hash out the rest of my plan.
SO for now, I am going to add up the money i am saving from doing my FRUGAL shopping, and transfer it from my bank account to my ING direct account, that I just opened (for free). Keep you posted…until next time

Good going Hazel. Most convenience stores charge way more than regular grocery stores. They make a profit by doing so.
Hey Hazel! I am a Southern Lady who loves to talk to people that come from different areas. New York has always been sort of one of those “must do’s” on the “do list”, and I really hope one day I can come experience NY, other than the virtual tour down the streets on mapquest! Anyway, best of luck to you on your scholorshop venture!! I am doing the same. I also do Communications Arts/Visual Communications at Univ. of Phoenix, online.
Good going!! People really need to understand that we are starving students trying to better our lives!!
Good job invest!!
